Product Review: LUSH Ayesha Fresh Face Mask

Sunday, September 8, 2013
I know that Cupcake is a bit of a cult favorite on YouTube when it comes to LUSH Fresh Faced Masks, but you seldom hear about the others. Today I'd like to introduce you to the only face mask I've bought more than once; Ayesha, a.k.a the reasonably priced and extremely ethical face mask that makes me feel like a field full of sunlit daisies.

Here is what LUSH has to say about their Fresh Faced Masks:

Our Fresh Face Masks are handmade with the finest essential oils, fresh fruits and veggies, deep cleansing clays and nutrient rich herbs. We use active ingredients to address a host of skin needs, from dryness to breakouts to fine lines, and everything in between! When we use the term “active ingredient”, this refers to an ingredient that is biologically active. We use freshly squeezed juices, extracts, or whole fruits and vegetables in our face masks, so they need to be refrigerated at all times to prevent spoilage. Unfortunately, this means we are unable to offer our Fresh Face Masks online. Please visit your nearest LUSH shop to purchase your Fresh Face Mask. Fresh Masks means that the benefits of each ingredient are delivered directly to your skin within minutes. Your face mask should be used as a treatment, applied once or twice a week to refresh and deep cleanse the skin. Not sure which mask is for you? Stop by your local shop for your skin care consultation today

Doesn't that just sound, well, lush? And at only $6.95 a pot, it's a relatively affordable luxury, well... affordable for LUSH anyhow. Now, since LUSH uses a multitude of fresh ingredients, these face masks should be used within about 3 weeks of being made and needs to be kept in the refrigerator so they don't go rancid. I know 3 weeks sounds like a pretty intense deadline, but there is just enough product in this pot to pamper yourself a few times a week and not have it go bad. However I like to cheat the clock and freeze little single serve packets of it so I can thaw and use them at a later date.

Yeah, yeah... Ayesha is formulated to firm up "mature skin", but even at 20, it takes my skin back a few years in addition to making it feel as smooth as a babies bottom and evening out my tone a bit. LUSH describes Ayesha as so:
Named after the fictional priestess who bathed in the flame of immortality, Ayesha is a blend of tightening and toning ingredients to refresh tired looking skin. We use elderflowers and vitamin C-rich kiwi fruit to brighten dull spots, asparagus to mop up excess oils and honey for soothing sore or red areas. Ten minutes with this witch hazel and kiwi fruit mask and you’ll see why-sallow looking areas are transformed into bright, glowing skin.

Just look at all of those magical youth-simulating ingredients!

Like pretty much every single mask out there, all you've gotta do is just slather it on to your skin (avoiding the eyes and the lips), wait for it to dry, and then wash it off!

As for the actual mask itself, it's a bit of an ugly (and stinky) bug.

It honestly smells like heavily spiced rice pudding, garlic cloves, and a very pretentious spice isle. It's not totally unbearable, but it's not super pleasant. The texture is a big grainy, but I honestly see that as an added perk! After the mask dries, and just before washing it off, I like to moisten it a bit and use it to gently exfoliate my skin.

I'm beyond beautiumous, I know.

And when applied to the skin, it definitely looks like the stereotypical, green, goopy, "creature from the black lagoon" mask that tacky aging women use in movies, which happen to scare the pants off of anyone they see.

Point proven, and God bless Jennifer Coolidge.

However the results far surpass the less than savory appearance and scent, which is why I highly recommend this face mask to just about anyone. Young or old, dry, oily, or normal... this will probably work for you and give your skin a gorgeous boost!

I love trying LUSH Fresh Face Masks, but I always come back to Ayesha. You've gotta give this little lovely pot a try!

  2. As a current Lush employee I am not saying this for sales purposes but to help. DO NOT FREEZE THE MASKS! Unfortunatly it seemed logical but because of the enzymes, freezing causes seperation and the process of freezing changes the particles and therefore leaves the much needed enzymes unable to work their magic! I know, it sucks but if freezing were to work, Lush would hear far less complaints about the price (I hear it everyday) and they would simply recommend a slightly longer shelf life.
