Lipstick Queen Sinner Rust Review + Swatch

Sunday, August 24, 2014
I've been feeling a bit nostalgic lately. Maybe it is the fact that I just turned 21 and relinquished my last little shred of childhood, or maybe it is getting close to fall... either way, I've been obsessed with finding the perfect 90s brick red. That is how Lipstick Queen in Sinner Rust came into my life.

I didn't know all that much about Lipstick Queen beyond a few swatches at Ulta prior to picking this little sweetie up. I don't find many people talking about this brand beyond the blue, skin reactive lipstick that they offer. The lipstick I picked up is from the "Sinner" line, which is a line of matte lippies with full opacity (they're formulated with 90% pigment). Lipstick Queen claims that this is supposed to be a long wearing, moisturizing, and comfortable matte lipstick to wear.

The packaging isn't anything super exciting. It is a satin-y black cylinder with the minimalistic Lipstick Queen logo on it in a subdued gold. There is a second "By Poppy" logo on the scroll-y bit, as seen above.

The color is absolutely G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S! It is a beautiful rusty brown-red, which I love since these tend to be a bit more subdued and moody in comparison to the ever-so-popular iconic blue-based reds.

Lipstick Queen claims that the lipstick is fragrance free, but I do get a slight vanilla-y whiff from it a la MAC lipsticks. Speaking of MAC lipsticks, I would liken the feel of this to their matte lipsticks, but I find Sinner Rust to be more moisturizing. For those of y'all not familiar with MAC mattes, they can feel a little heavy, but they have great pigmentation, and while they don't add moisture to the lips, they don't turn your pucker into a prune. The only thing that this lipstick didn't deliver was a fully matte finish - it is more of a satin.

TL;DR section:

Price: $22

Size: 0.12 oz/3.5 g

Availability: Ulta, Nordstrom, Barney's, and various other retailers

Pros:
  • Amazing pigmentation
  • Pretty comfortable formula for a "matte"
  • More moisturizing than most mattes
  • No unpleasant scent or taste
  • Wears well on the lips
Cons:
  • Doesn't dry down to a matte completely
  • Can feel a little heavy on the lips
Cruelty free: Yep!

Final thoughts: I really do love this color! I can really see this becoming a staple in my fall lipstick wardrobe. This is a pretty solid lipstick if you don't mind the price point. I may pick up some other shades from the Sinner line if I absolutely MUST have the color, but I don't feel the compulsive need to hoard them... meaning that they're really good lipsticks, but they don't have anything super eye-catching or novel about them.
