e.l.f Golden Bronzer Review + Swatch

Wednesday, August 12, 2015
I picked this up along with a few other goodies during a moment of weakness at CVS the other day. One of my best friends, Sami, used to gush about the e.l.f bronzer back in the day and I decided to pick up both at the little kiosk to see what the hype was about. Keep in mind that Sam is whiter than white, and I brown up pretty nicely in the sun, so my experience with this product doesn't exactly match her glowing review.

I'm just going to get right to the point on this bronzer. It's too light and too shimmery for my skin tone and personal tastes. I think that it works a lot better for people lighter than me as a healthy, luminous, subtle glow, or for people darker than me as a customizable highlighter brick... but I'm just in that awkward midpoint where it just ends up looking like shimmer, and that just isn't flattering on my congested summer skin. However, it does make a nice body shimmer!

As for the product quality, well, this is a $3 product we're talking about. I love the fact that it comes with a HUGE mirror, and that the packaging is pretty sleek, but I could have sworn that the weight of the product wasn't obnoxiously pasted on the compact the last time I bought one of these things. It just messes up the sleek feng shui, you know? The powder itself is very soft, and while the swatches below look like it's full pigment, it's actually quite sheer in real life and it tends to kick up a lot of product as well. I tried repurposing this into eyeshadows since I can't do much with it on my face, and I found the shades to be a little too sheer and left more of a tinted shimmer wash than anything else.

Swatches after the jump!

Even though this product bummed me out, it wasn't because of some massive travesty with the formula or anything - it was merely an issue of skin tone and personal preference. It's super easy to repurpose neutral shades, so experimenting with this was fun and I don't feel that I necessarily wasted $3, but I don't think I'd repurchase this in the future. Here is to hoping that the other bronzer I picked up suits me better.

TL;DR section:

Price: $3

Size: 0.53 oz, 15 g

Availability: eyeslipsface.com, CVS, Target, WalMart

Pros:

  • Good customizable color
  • Easily blended
  • Great for super pale complextions
  • Sleek, sturdy packaging with a HUGE mirror
Cons:
  • There is a bit of powder kick up since it's super buttery
  • VERY shimmery
  • Only works as a bronzer for super pale people

Alternate uses:
  • Body shimmer
  • Highlighting quad for medium - deep skin tones

Cruelty free: Indeed it is!

Final thoughts: This is probably the first time in forever that I've had an issue with a bronzer being "too light". They really aren't kidding about the "golden" part since this functions better as a golden highlight for the majority of skin tones beyond light/medium. I'll get my use out of this in other aspects, but I won't repurchase it because the shimmer and lightness of it just doesn't work for me.

  1. This is really pretty! I wouldn't use something so shimmery as a bronzer, but I love that color.
