Essence Sheer & Shine Lipsticks in "BFF" and "Frosted" Review + Swatches

Wednesday, March 9, 2016
The lovely people at Essence sent me these for consideration. All opinions and thoughts expressed are my own.

Here we have another Essence Spring 2016 launch! I posted about their Liquid Lipsticks earlier this week if you'd like to check that out. Sheer washes of color really scream spring to me, and these Sheer & Shine lippies provide just that. Sure, full opaque lipsticks are near and dear to my heat, but sometimes you've gotta have a low maintenance option like these babes.

These lipsticks come housed in silver tubes with see though, color coded caps so it's easy to tell which shade you're picking up. They also have color coordinated shade name labels on the base as well. All of the packaging is plastic, but it's still pretty sturdy. Like all other essence lipsticks, the brand logo "e" is etched into the side of the product making it look way more expensive than the $2.99 price tag attached to them. These also smell a little bit like vanilla, but it's not overpowering. "BFF" is a sheer berry rose shade, and "Frosted" is a pale pink wash of simmer.

The name of this product describes it perfectly. The pigmentation is pretty sheer and there is a semi-gloss sheen to them. The color can kind of be built up a tad, but ultimately these will just give you sheer washes of color and a feel I'd liken to a tube of chapstick. I think that "Frosted" works best as a lipstick topper if you ever find yourself in need for some added shine. Because these are such sheer products, the wear time isn't stellar - expect to bring the tube with you to touch up through out the day.

TL;DR:

Price: $2.99

Size: 0.12 oz

Availability: Ulta, Target, Fred Meyer

Pros:
  • Has moisturizing properties
  • Feels very comfortable on the lips
Cons:
  • Wear time is rather short
Cruelty free: Oui oui, mon cheri!

Final thoughts: I'm actually quite fond of "BFF" and can see myself reaching for it a lot during the upcoming season. I've always had good luck with Essence lipsticks feeling super comfortable on the lips, and these are no exception. If you're a sheer wash kinda gal or guy, go ahead and toss $3 at one of these, but expect to frequently reapply.
